A hundred years ago, the word "t-shirt" wasn't even in the dictionary, and people regularly wore fancy suits and dresses. Today, you're far more likely to see someone walking down the street in a "That's What She Said" t-shirt than someone in a three-piece suit with a top hat. So what happened along the way?

1900: In the Beginning
Much like blue jeans, the t-shirt started out as work clothing. Around the turn of the 20th century, the t-shirt was introduced as a lightweight item for laborers in hot weather conditions. The US Navy and Army both made a standard t-shirt part of their uniform by World War I. Soldiers and sailors could work in their t-shirts without getting their full uniforms dirty. Their presence in Europe helped make the t-shirt a worldwide phenomenon. After World War I, all the way through the Great Depression, the t-shirt continued to spread among laborers and farm workers because it was such a convenient piece of clothing.

1950: T-Shirts Become Cool
After World War II is where t-shirts really start to shine. Of course, Hollywood is at least partially to blame. Thanks to stars like James Dean and Marlon Brando, who wore bare t-shirts (gasp!) in big movies in the 1950s, the t-shirt became a symbol of teenage rebellion. So if you wanted to stick it to your lame parents in the 1950s, you put on a plain white t-shirt and headed out the door. You daredevil!

1960: Things Get Radical
T-shirts took off from there. In the 1960s, people decided that regular white t-shirts were kind of boring, so they started printing messages on them and making them tie-dye. And that opened up a whole new psychedelic world, dude. T-shirts became a new way of expressing yourself and your opinions.

2011: T-Shirts Forever
Pretty soon more people were picking up on this new awesome way to make a statement. The free market went to work, and there was a sudden, huge proliferation of t-shirts. Music fans buy t-shirts of their favorite bands. Activists wear t-shirts with political messages. People buy t-shirts from their favorite movies. Tourists bring back t-shirts from places they visit. Thanks to the Internet, people buy shirts with random funny sayings on them. And if you still can't find a t-shirt that interests you, you can even make your own custom t-shirt - anything you can imagine!

The Future
Maybe in two hundred years we'll all be wearing funky jumpsuits like in The Jetsons or Star Trek...but for now, t-shirts rule the world!

One day as I was heading out on the highway, I was thinking about the various slogans that we hear every day...such as, "Got Milk", or maybe "Just Do It" and on and on...

Then it came to me..."Du Ya?"

I thought Du Ya could apply to just about anything and started to come up with a long list; such as Du Ya Play Baseball, Du Ya Play Soccer, Du Ya Fish, Hunt, Skateboard, BMX, or Du Ya Drive a Classic Car. Anything you like or any sport you play can become a "Du Ya."

So...in January of 2010, my family and I started designing and selling a line of Du Ya Custom T-Shirts and other apparel from our portable trailer...traveling around to various events, such as the Ming Fling Speedboat Races that are held in Bakersfield, California and the Dixon May Fair. Du Ya is a family owned and operated business that is located in Vacaville, California. Our success has been great and Du Ya has decided to expand its business to the Internet to share with the World!

We do our best to keep prices reasonable, while still making high-quality tees. Our shirts are printed on the Gildan brand for men and the Bella brand for women. Recently we have started to offer a line of women's intimate apparel and women's shorts.

Dressing appropriately has always been deemed an integral part of society particularly in the case of the upper class Victorian society. In the 1800s women went through the agony of being squeezed literally into a corset. After adorning the corset the lady's servants would then pull the corset as tight as possible before tying it off. On top of the corset, undergarments and then the classical Victorian dress would be stepped into.

Because of the corset the women would look to have a teeny waist and then a fuller figure from the hips downwards and the illusion of an emphasised rear as Victorian dresses were made to be puffy at the back.

People who were poor however, were left with having to wear more simplified clothing that was more or less worn until it was nothing but rags. Working in factories and being exposed to all the pollutants that were contained there many people became ill and unable to feed themselves and thus had to resort to stealing for which they would be hanged if caught even children were not exempt from being hanged for this crime.

The atrocious conditions in the factories left many in ill states and even children worked in these factories also. It was popular for children to be chimney sweeps also. They would climb into the flue of more privileged people's homes and using a brush would have to sweep all the ash out of the flue. This was not only messy work but extremely dangerous as one wrong foot could mean that they fell to their deaths which sadly, many children did. The reason children were used for this job was because they were the only ones small enough to fit in the flues of the chimney. Often left with no choice other than to do jobs such as this or forced into it by others as a way to obtain some money.

The next time you think that someone has made a fashion disaster at either yours or someone else's dinner party just remember that someone coming to dinner in a t-shirt - even a funny one is not the end of the world and will not ruin your dinner party. Society today allows for a lot more freedom from the clothes that we wear or the way we style our hair to the car that we drive. We are truly lucky to be living in times such as these as the Victorians were not as lucky.

Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day, celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, has been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863, when during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving to be celebrated on Thursday, November 26.

The event that Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated to give thanks to God for helping the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony survive their first brutal winter in New England.

The first Thanksgiving feast lasted three days, providing enough food for 53 pilgrims and 90 Native Americans. How to Wash T-Shirts

Screen printed cotton t-shirts require some special care during washing and drying to ensure that the print lasts as long as possible before it cracks, fades, or peels. If it's treated well, a high quality printed shirt should make it through at least 35 washes before the print starts to fade. Thinner, lower quality shirts do age faster than shirts of higher quality, but proper care will still maximize their looks and lifespan.

Caring for your print

Read the garment care tags on each of your tees, so you can wash them accordingly. Do, however, remember that prints may require more gentle treatment than the shirt fabric does, and in particular - regardless of what the garment care tag says, don't dry clean plastisol inks! They rarely mix well with dry cleaning chemicals.
Separate white garments from colored ones, and inspect for stains.

If required, apply a good quality stain remover to the stains (generally avoiding the printed design) and set the tees aside for a while prior to washing them so the stain remover has a chance to work. Read and closely follow the directions for whichever stain remover you're using.
Turn each printed T-shirt shirt inside-out, so the design is on the inside and the amount of rubbing it receives during washing and drying is minimized. This step is important!
Wash your T-shirts with similar soft fabrics only - no heavy jeans or jackets - to minimize the amount of rubbing they'll receive.

Wash in cold water with normal detergent, at the recommended soap-water ratio for the detergent - a gentle hand wash, or a "delicates" cycle in a washing machine is usually fine.
UseHanHan - You can wash your shirts gently with warm water if they are particularly dirty, but avoid using hot water and excessive agitation (both of which are exceedingly unfriendly to prints and shirt sizes). Stick to gentle washing with cold water to minimize shrinkage and color loss.

If you use a dryer, be sure to use the cool setting only for your printed T-shirts so they don't shrink, stretch or melt! Generally, the safest bet is to air dry your tees, rather than tumble dry them. The less friction applied to a print, the better. If you place a hanger through the neck hole of the shirt, you may end up with a stretched neck hole and/or lumps in the shoulders or sleeves from the edges of the hanger, so it's usually better to hang the shirt by its sleeves, or drape the shirt over the bar at the bottom of a triangular-shaped hanger.

Once they're dry, iron and fold the shirts. If the print is plastisol ink, don't iron the design - plastisol is a thermoplastic, and can melt. Water-based inks, which are absorbed into the fibres of the T-shirt, are usually resistant to ironing.

Note- If the ink still peels off the shirt, or washes out in random, spotty areas after only a couple of careful washes, the most likely cause is ink washout. Ink washout occurs when ink is insufficiently cured after printing, and therefore fails to adhere properly to the fabric. If you experience this problem, discuss it with your printer - the fault is most likely with the print itself, rather than insufficient care being taken during washing and drying.

Chances are that the first fabric to touch your skin was cotton. It is by far the most common and versatile fabric known to man. Baby diapers used to be almost exclusively cotton and are still popular among many families.

The earliest use of cotton has been estimated to have occurred between 3000 to 5000 BC. and was worn by the Egyptians as far back as 2500 BC. It has been a major factor in the world economy and continues to be the leading commercial fiber in the United States since around 1800. Cotton is grown in semi-arid regions of the southern United States and at one time was called King Cotton as it was the primary commercial concern of the south. Cotton is still a major American export and it even has its own museum in South Carolina.

One of the most amazing properties of cotton as a fabric is its ability to breathe. Cotton can retain nearly 30 times its weight in water. Thus it quickly absorbs perspiration from the wearer and releases it to the air through evaporation. Other remarkable properties include the propensity to stand up to high temperatures for sterilizing and ironing without disintegrating. It whitens well with chlorine bleach and absorbs dyes easily. It wears well and stands up to friction. It is often blended with polyester, wool, or other fibers.

Cotton fiber is gathered from the seed pod of the cotton plant and ginned. A gin is a machine that separates the seeds from the cotton fiber. It was invented by Eli Whitney in 1793 and is one of the revolutionary events in cotton processing. The fiber is then spun into thread and woven into fabric. The commercial process is actually far more complicated and complex but those are the general steps.

Cotton fabrics include muslin, flannel, gingham, seersucker, terry cloth, gauze, drill, swiss, duck, sateen, poplin, organdy, lawn, flannelette, percale, velveteen, outing flannel, whipcord, sailcloth, polished cotton, and others.

Currently there is a trend toward organically raised cotton. It uses compost and other natural fertilizers but no synthetic fertilizers, and utilizes ladybug introduction and other natural pest control measures. Earthtone cotton fabrics use no dyes, reducing the cost of the cotton up to 40% as compared to chemically dyed cotton. There is a return to naturally colored cotton. Not all cottons grow white. Some cottons can be grown that are brown, light purple and rust.

The finest cotton is considered by many to be Egyptian cotton. Fabric made from Egyptian cotton has a smooth, silky texture. Pima cotton is grown in the United States an exported around the world while Indian cotton is generally the least expensive and can be course.

Cotton has survived drought, boll weevils and seeds have crossed entire oceans on the wind. It makes a tough, useful fabric that will never go out of style.

It is a very comfortable material, and many people love to wear it. Did you know that there are several different types of cotton? Well, there are lots of different kinds of cotton that are used for clothing.

Heavier cotton that is found in sweaters for the fall and winter is called Canton Cotton. It is soft and difficult to pull apart. This is the most popular type of cotton, and most people are familiar with it. It feels a little like flannel.

Organic Cotton is a little bit harder to come by. Regular department stores normally don't sell items with organic cotton, but there are many online retailers for it. Organic Cotton is grown without chemicals. All of the harmful pesticides used in typical growing processes are absent from the process of developing this cotton. Even in the manufacturing process, organic clothing is not exposed to the environmentally harmful chemicals that other materials are exposed to.

Another type of cotton is Bamboo cotton. This type of cotton material is 30% organic and is very, very soft. The use actual crushed bamboo mixed with the organic cotton to create clothing. It is all natural, and chemical free. It is better for your skin and for the environment.

A lighter flannel-like cotton is called cotton twill. It is good for fall wear, because it is a bit lighter than canton cotton.

French Terry cotton is slightly heavier than cotton twill, but not as heavy as Canton cotton. It is rather soft and has a short nap.

Honeycomb cotton is a lightweight type of cotton that dries quickly.

Egyptian cotton has longer, thinner fibers. This type of cotton creates strong yarn that makes nice and smooth fabrics.

Yet another type of cotton is Oxford Chambray. It is a medium weight cotton.

Regardless of the type of cotton that is in your clothing, you can always tell that it is indeed cotton. It has such a unique feeling and texture to it. Cotton material is great for sweaters, underwear, pajamas, shirts, shorts, pants and practically anything that you can wear. It lets your skin breathe. Most people like the way cotton clothing feels on their body.

Some people have found that they are allergic to cotton. It could be a particular type of cotton that is used for their clothing, or a chemical that is used in growing the cotton or manufacturing the clothes.

Organic and Bamboo cotton are really good for the environment because they don't use many of the harmful chemicals, like dyes, pesticides, and other things that pollute the environment. People who think that they might be allergic to cotton might just be allergic to the chemicals in non organic cotton clothes. The process of growing cotton and making clothes can potentially involve heavy use of environmentally harmful materials that contribute to global warming and the destruction of the ozone layer. Thankfully, some companies are making strides to make more organic clothing so that the things that we wear are 'greener'.

These clothing items are high in quality and will last for years if cared for properly.

The final compromise might be the cotton/polyester blend that is popular today. When combined in the right proportions, with slightly more cotton than polyester, the result is a smooth, soft fabric that does not wrinkle, retains its shape after washing, and does not shrink.

History

Cotton candy was first recorded around Mid-18th Century. At that time, spun sugar was an expensive, labor-intensive endeavor and was not generally available to the average person. Machine-spun cotton candy was invented in 1897 by William Morrison and John C. Wharton and first introduced to a wide audience at the 1904 World's Fair as "Fairy Floss" with great success, selling 68,655 boxes at the then-high $0.25, half the cost of admission to the fair. Fairy floss was renamed to "cotton candy" in the 1920s.

Tootsie Roll of Canada Ltd. has a bagged product called Fluffy Stuff that it claims was introduced at the 1893 World's Fair.

The United States celebrates National Cotton Candy Day on December 7.

Production

The machine used to make cotton candy consists of a small bowl, into which sugar is poured and food coloring is added.

The sugar reserve bowl is spun at high speed while heaters near the rim melt the sugar, which is squeezed out through tiny holes by centrifugal force.

The molten sugar then solidifies in the air and is caught in a large metal bowl surrounding the central sugar reservoir bowl. The operator of the machine twirls a stick, cone, or their hands around the rim of the large catching bowl, gathering the sugar strands into portions. Modern cotton candy machines work in much the same way as older ones.

Texture

Sticky and sweet, it dissolves quickly in the mouth (due to its amorphous nature) although it feels like wool to the touch. It does not have much of an aroma although the machine itself has a cooked sugar smell when in operation. It is soft and fluffy when dry. When it comes in contact with moisture, it becomes sticky and damp. Because the sugar is hygroscopic, and has a very large surface area, it will become coarser, harder and generally less "flossy" once exposed to the atmosphere.
